Wedding speech cue cards

Cue cards hold keywords, not the whole speech, so you can look up, glance down and find your place. Put the opening and closing lines on in full, number every card, and use large type.

This is general guidance; London Speech Workshop also advises cue cards over word-for-word notes. Our guides on wedding speech nerves collect what speaking coaches and wedding sites say about notes, pace and rehearsal, and how long a wedding speech should be covers length.

Make your cue cards

Leave a blank line between paragraphs. Each paragraph becomes a card, and long ones are split at the end of a sentence.

0 cards, 0 words.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, and you do not need an account. The cards are made in your browser and are gone when you close the page. The timer uses the same 150 words per minute pace as our speech timer, a typical range rather than a published figure, so read aloud once to find your own.

To print: choose A4, scale 100 percent, margins none, then cut along the dashed lines. Some printers cannot print to the paper edge; if yours clips the border, the text is inset and still readable.

Questions

What should I write on wedding speech cue cards?

Keywords and short prompts, not the whole speech. London Speech Workshop advises cue cards rather than word-for-word notes. Writing the opening and closing lines in full is our general guidance, not from a published source.

How many cue cards do I need for a wedding speech?

It depends on length. This tool makes one card per paragraph and splits long paragraphs at sentence ends, with at most 45 words on a card. A 5 minute speech is about 750 words at 150 words per minute, so at least 17 cards.

What size should wedding speech cue cards be?

This tool prints A6 cards, four to an A4 sheet. A6 is 105 by 148 millimetres, close to a 4 by 6 inch index card. Number every card so you can put them back in order.

Is my speech saved or sent anywhere?

No. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored. The cards are made in your browser and disappear when you close or refresh the page. You do not need an account.
