Best man speech for your best friend: what to say and avoid

Last updated 26 October 2026

When the groom is your best friend, your problem is too many stories, not too few. Introduce yourself and how you met, pick one or two moments that show who he is, connect them to the person he is marrying, leave out anything from the stag, and finish with a toast to both of them.

How a best friend's speech differs

A brother has family history; a best friend has chosen history. You were there for the flatshares, the bad jobs, the holidays and probably the relationships before this one. Most of the room was not, and his new in-laws may have met you once. That changes two things.

First, you have to explain yourself. WeddingWire's best man guide says "Talk about how you met him, how long you've known each other, and what kind of great friend he is." Second, your best material is often the least usable, because it depends on things only your group shares. If the groom is your brother instead, our best man speech for your brother covers the family version.

How long

Source Guidance
Bridebook, speech length A traditional speech is usually 5 to 7 minutes
WeddingWire, best man speech (US) "between three and five minutes max"

At the 100 to 150 words a minute that VirtualSpeech gives as a comfortable pace, five minutes is about 500 to 750 words. Our UK best man speech guide covers the UK traditions and running order. Our best man toast guide covers the shorter US version.

Choosing from years of stories

List every story you could tell, then cut hard. Keep a story only if it passes three tests:

  1. It shows something true about him that his partner would recognise: loyalty, stubbornness, the way he looks after people.
  2. Someone who has never met you could follow it without background. If it needs "you had to be there", cut it.
  3. He would be happy for his grandparents and new in-laws to hear it. Bridebook's guide to a speech for a best friend says "make sure it's a story that your best friend would be happy for them to hear," and "If you're unsure, consider running it past them first."

One story told well beats four told quickly. If you have a second, make it about him and his partner together.

What to leave out

WeddingWire is direct on the two biggest risks:

  • "Leave those drunken tales and embarrassing stories for the bachelor party and keep your best man speech PG." In the UK, that means the stag.
  • "Your friend's wedding is absolutely not the time to bring up ex-girlfriends or previous relationships."

Also leave out in-jokes the room cannot follow. WeddingWire says you can start with an inside joke; if you do, explain it in a line so the room can follow. Bridebook suggests adding "a memorable inside joke that resonates with the couple" at the end of your toast.

Bring in his partner

A best friend's speech can easily become a speech about the friendship. WeddingWire says "Focus on the couple's relationship, and not just your own." Give the partner real space:

  • When you first met them, and what you noticed.
  • The moment you knew they were serious. Best friends usually see this before anyone else.
  • What he does differently now.

A simple structure

  1. Introduce yourself and how you met him.
  2. One story that shows who he is.
  3. His partner, and what you have seen of them together.
  4. Thanks, if the groom has asked you to give any.
  5. The toast to both of them.

Make it specific, not generic

Best friend speeches go generic when they say "he's always been there for me" without showing it. Replace every claim with the moment that proved it: the night he drove three hours to collect you, the job interview he coached you for. Use real places and years. Quote something he actually says. If a line could be said by any best man about any groom, rewrite it until it could only be about him.

Example best man speech for a best friend

This is an example written for this page. The names and story are invented. It runs about 200 words.

Example: Good evening, everyone. I'm Ollie. I met Dan on our first day at university, when he knocked on my door to ask if I knew how to work the oven. I didn't. We set off the fire alarm for the whole block, stood in the car park in our dressing gowns, and have been friends ever since. In fifteen years, Dan has helped me move house four times, never once complained, and always brought the biscuits. When my dad was ill, he drove up every weekend for two months and never made a fuss about it. That's who he is. He shows up. Then, five years ago, he started talking about a woman from his running club, Amy, who was faster than him and wouldn't let him forget it. I knew it was serious when he started training on Sundays. Amy, you've made my best friend happier than I've ever seen him, and you've finally taught him how to use an oven. Please raise your glasses to Amy and Dan.
